Ivy's dog will make meaningful differences in her life.
Ivy Schamis is a beloved teacher who survived the February 14, 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Ivy was teaching her History of the Holocaust class in which students were discussing how to combat hate, when the shooter entered her classroom and fired at students. Two of her students were murdered in front of Ivy and their classmates. Four other students were injured.
Ivy has been extremely supportive of her students since the shooting. She has a sincere concern for their well-being and their ability to cope with their trauma. She checks in with many frequently. She understands their PTSD and anxiety and she worries for them.
A service dog will help Ivy cope with her own PTSD and anxiety, while also allowing her to continue to support her students. Ivy plans to name her dog Norman if a boy or Sayde if a girl, and this dog will be a life-altering force of good and a source of hope for Ivy.
**** This campaign has been increased because Ivy wishes to conduct all future training in Washington, DC - to prepare for city distractions and public transportation, which will result in greater cost to Steadfast Service Dogs.
